Foundation for Children with Cancer Diseases „Krwinka” supports children with oncological diseases from Ukraine and their families

During the ongoing aggression by Russia against Ukraine, the Foundation for Children with Cancer Diseases „Krwinka” took care of six Ukrainian oncologically ill children, their parents and siblings. All of them were evacuated from hospitals located in areas affected by warfare. The treatment of children is continued at the Department of Pediatrics, Oncology & Hematology of the Medical University of Lodz with which the „Krwinka” Foundation constantly cooperates. The head of the Department is professor Wojciech Młynarski, who undertook global activities to bring children with oncological diseases to Poland as well as to other countries oncology centers around the world.

The evacuation took place under dramatic circumstances, and the children and parents were accompanied by an unimaginable fear for their own lives. Then a long trip awaited them, burdened with many insecurities related to the change of place of residence and not knowing the local language. After reaching Lodz, children and parents were exhausted by the intense journey. They had almost no personal belongings to bring them any comfort. They often came with just one suitcase, which mainly contained things for little patients. They needed basic hygiene items, clean clothes and toys for children. The “Krwinka” Foundation immediately took care of the refugees, handing them all the necessary items and hygienic supplies. Since then, organization has been constantly meeting social needs, while providing invaluable psychological and pedagogical support to both sick children and their mothers and siblings.

The “Krwinka” Foundation has hired a Ukrainian psychologist, thanks to whom it is possible to provide comprehensive help and quick response to emerging needs. The psychologist works in oncohematology wards and also provides support to refugees outside the hospital by visiting those, who can go to the allocated apartments. Beside Ukrainian volunteers – students of the Medical University of Lodz – visit oncohematology wards every day.

The health condition of children varies. Due to the nature of the disease, some children can take part in art and music therapy classes, while others are unable to get up from bed. The “Krwinka” Foundation does everything to be close to all the little patients and brighten their faces with smilesat this doubly difficult time. As part of the organized events, it integrates the Polish and Ukrainian communities, encouraging them to spend time together. The “Krwinka” Foundation also uses every opportunity to give gifts and distract children from the harsh reality related to oncological treatment. Also Ukrainian patients were invited to a rehabilitation and therapeutic stay with their families, whose health condition allows them to travel surrounded by nature.

The purpose of the “Krwinka” Foundation is to provide convenient, peaceful and safe living conditions for children with cancer as well as their parents who come from Ukraine. Now there are finances to secure their stay in the near future, but that they may be not enough later. The children with oncological diseases from Ukraine need your help.
